Gwyneth made her very first quilt! She was so excited to finish it. It took her quite a while to make. She already has fabric and plans to make another, but probably not until Christmas break. (She’s a busy, busy 3rd grader. 😉 )
Gwyneth named the quilt “Spring” for the “pretty fabrics” she used. The fabric is Lottie Da by Heather Bailey. She did simple straight line quilting using Aurifil thread on my Juki (which she loved!). She pieced it on her Janome Hello Kitty machine.
The finished quilt measured 31″ x 50″ – perfect to wrap around herself.
She entered the quilt in the youth division of the Minnesota Quilters (MQ) show last May. The night before the show she decided she wanted to make herself a skirt to wear. This was the first skirt she has ever made (and of course she wanted to make it on my JUKI).
For a first skirt, we used my easy-peasy skirt tutorial. She made it extra gathered because she said that was more fun. 🙂
She wore it to the MQ show in St Cloud! She told everyone she met that she had a quilt in the show AND that she made her own skirt.
She was also very excited that she got a pretty big ribbon and that she won some fabric!
In August she entered the same quilt in the MN state fair education division. She got a 2nd place ribbon (and $5!!!).
That is so cool! Tell Gwyn she did a wonderful job, both with the quilt and her skirt. My son made his first quilt when he was 10. It was such fun. He is now 31 and still uses that quilt. Congratulations and keep up the great job!
What a sweet story! Tell Gwen congratulations from West Virginia!!! I love her quilt AND her skirt. She is very talented!
