I picked up this inexpensive print of Diego Rivera’s The Flower Carrier back in 2000 at a visit to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. There was something about the colors I really liked. Now when I look at it, I think of my husband. It was our first trip together when we were dating. We went to an American Chemical Society Conference in San Francisco and one of our excursions was to the modern art museum. I’ve held onto the print for a while without doing anything with it. I finally decided it needed a home.
One of the problems with this print was the unusual size (7 1/4″ x 6 3/4″). I really wanted it matted and framed, but didn’t want to spend a lot of money getting it professionally done, especially considering the print cost me $6. I started with an inexpensive 8″ x 10″ frame with a 5″ x 7″ mat. Working on the back (or wrong side) of the mat, I marked the 7 1/4″ x 6 3/4″ opening with a pencil, making sure it was centered. Using and X-Acto knife and straight edge, I carefully cut out the new size for the mat. Et voila! A custom, inexpensive mat and frame for a print that makes me smile!
