I can’t believe my little boy started Kindergarten. He was a tad nervous since he was going to a new school (no more preschool), but still very excited. We took a little trip to the school last week to meet his teacher and as he put it “see where they keep the milk and toys, oh, and the potty” — all very important things when you’re five. After meeting his teacher, he wasn’t so nervous and we set out to one of my favorite fabric stores to let him pick out fabric for the backpack I promised to make.
This is what he picked out!
Echino – Cars in Turquoise
I love it! So him – especially since his current favorite show is Top Gear (he watches it with daddy).
To make his backpack, I used Rae’s (from Made By Rae) Toddler Backpack pattern. I had to enlarge it a bit since I wanted to accommodate normal sized folders and books. I simply increased the width by 2″ and height by 3″ all over. I made this backpack (unmodified) last year and I loved it. So did my son.
Here’s the finished backpack!
I decided to use some extra strong denim thread for the straps and bottom of the bag. It also added a lovely decorative quality. I do like how the stitching turned out!
So, backpack made. Time for new shoes. Here’s what he picked out!
Then off to pick up a lunchbox (to bring his snack in) with dad. Don’t forget to pack a healthy snack!
Here’s one little boy – excited and ready for school!
Don’t forget the picture for the teacher!
I had to throw in this photo. My husband on his first day of Kindergarten next to my son on his first day. Two different schools, two different towns, but two very similar boys!
Your son has great taste in fabric! And that backpack pattern is the best! It’s one of my go-to items when I need to whip up a cute birthday gift.
Watch out, the time just starts flying by now. They grow up so fast!
super cool backpack. the son/father pic comparison, holy cow, what similarities!
So cute!!! –Both your son and the backpack. I love the color combo. The brown piping looks so great. I have the pattern but have been afraid to try it because piping is scary to me!
Great job!
